Stocks Rally on HP Earnings

NEW YORK, Nov 21, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Stock prices started higher on
Wall Street Thursday.

The Dow Jones industrial average was ahead 50. Gainers outnumbered losers by
about 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 14 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Stock Index
has added five points.

A reassuring earnings report from Hewlett-Packard is helping set the early tone
for Thursday's market action, as is a positive report on the labor market.

HP shares jumped 10 percent in after-hours trading after the computer company
posted better-than-expected profits.

The Labor Department, meantime, reported Thursday morning that first-time claims
for jobless benefits tumbled last week to a four-month low. Still to come, the
Leading Economic Indicators from the Conference Board in the coming hour.

Investors were paying little mind to General Electric's announcement that it's
lowering profits forecasts for the fourth quarter and for next year.

That's because the news essentially confirms speculation from earlier in the
week.
