China Unicom Group targets 21 mln CDMA subscribers by end-2003 -

November 21, 2002 HONG KONG; China Unicom Ltd chief executive officer Wang Jianzhou said the group is targeting a subscriber base of 21 mln for its CDMA services by the end of 2003.

At present, China Unicom Group has around 5 mln CDMA subscribers, which is expected to rise to 7 mln by the end of this year. At the end of October, China Unicom Ltd -- the group's listed vehicle in Hong Kong -- had CDMA subscribers of around 2.965 mln.

"We target to have 21 mln CDMA subscribers for the whole group by the end of 2003, of which 12 mln will belong to Hong Kong-listed China Unicom," he said.

Wang was speaking at a press briefing about the company's acquisition of Unicom New Century (BVI) Ltd from its parent, China United Telecommunications Group, for 22.5 bln yuan. Unicom New Century is China United's holding company for the nine mobile networks.

China Unicom will pay 4.8 bln yuan in cash for the acquisition and will also assume Unicom New Century debt amounting to 17.7 bln yuan.
