A list of recently approved Japanese handset models (by their equivalent to the FCC).....courtesy of Data Rox.

My guess is that the V-SA701 is the Sanyo W-CDMA model that Schrock shows during his presentation (MSM5200).

JATE Approves Many New Mobile Phone Handset Models
November 21, 2002 (TOKYO) -- The Japan Approvals Institute for Telecommunications Equipment (JATE) unveiled the list of communications devices it approved in the period from Oct. 16-31.

The list includes mobile phones due to be marketed around the end of 2002 and early 2003 and yet to be officially announced by their own makers.

Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Ltd. (MCI) received JATE approval for its "P251iS." The 251 series comprises mobile phones with a built-in camera launched by NTT DoCoMo Inc. Following the introduction of "D251i," "F251i" and "N251i," NTT DoCoMo unveiled "SH251iS" as the first of the 251iS series, the second version of the 251 series on Nov. 13. MCI has not commercialized any models in the 251i series, and therefore with P251iS, it appears to join in the 251iS series.

Toshiba Corp. received approval for the "CDMA A5304T." Currently, Toshiba has the "A5301T" on the market as a higher-end model for the "au" service. The newly approved CDMA A5304T appears to be a successor of A5301T, which supports the CDMA2000 1x and is capable of "Movie Mail" to record and send 15 seconds of moving images (maximum).

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. had two models of mobile phones approved, the "J-SA05" and "V-SA701." Information on the J-SA05 was disclosed by J-Phone Group as of Oct. 29. This phone is due to be marketed in early December.

There is no specification about which mobile communication carrier V-SA701 aims for. According to some media news reports, however, Vodafone Group. disclosed a plan to integrate the J-Phone brand into the Vodafone brand in 2003.

"We have emphasized the unity of J-Phone and Vodafone through advertisements and other media, but are yet to decide on full details including such matters as timing and branding," a J-Phone official said.
