No, you shouldn't have to insert a cd. The xp upgrade disk will find the installed 98. You should only need a cd when you install on a freshly formatted drive. I'm not sure if you can switch to the new partition then but if you can't I would think you can install 98 on the new partition and then when you go to upgrade you can have the xp cd format the partition and install a fresh XP. That's what I did.
