I just heard Martin Indyk on the radio point out some interesting parallels. He said there had been three Arab uprisings in Israel/Palestinine: The Arab Revolt of 1936-39, the intifada of 1988-91, and the current intifada of 2000-. In the first two cases the unrest had lasted three years and died down due to exhaustion and an external event: WWII and the Gulf War, respectively. In the third case, we are in year three, there are signs of Palestinian exhaustion (that is why, he said, Hamas is talking with Fatah in Cairo), and Gulf War II is approaching.
