Intel Accidentally Lets the Cat Out of the Bag (extract from client server news December 2-8 issue) Intel's darling marketing people sent out a bunch of invitations to meet with the company at the ISSCC shindig in February and, although they reportedly weren't supposed to, managed to pre-announce the scared clock rate of Madison, the coming next-generation Itanium 2, as being 1.5GHz, a 50% boost from the existing McKinley. Intel has subsequently confirmed the statistic - which is what we've said it was gonna be anyway - along with the fact that the widget will have 410 million transistors and a die size of 374 square millimeters. It's also supposed to take 130 watts. There are now concerns of overheating being the price of the speed bump. Madison, of course, is due next summer and is known to double McKinley's...
