Now it is NOT one of those inside grills that have the heating unit on top... we have one of them and use them occasionally... they are good for grilling vegetable and the such. The outdoor grill has an element underneath the grill on which juices and sauces drip to create the smokey taste of the grill. I think we had paid around $50 for ours before we gave it to my daughter and then got it returned... Has side platforms for holding platters and EVERYTHING!!! Best deal we have except the smoker which also has an electric element in it... I just put branches of our apple tree on the element to get the smoker to work!
