Isn't "honest salesman" oxymoron in any field?

Everyone in business "sells" to some degree. As soon as one of my clients asks my opinion about this or that I'm selling them something. Sometimes my advice winds up with me telling them they don't need something or they don't need it from me. Anyone who has done any selling also knows that the best way to sell something is to make sure you are selling something that is in your customer's best interest, in serving their interest you actually serve your own because you earn their trust and their future business. This means being honest is one of the most important qualities. In order to be honest with your customers, you have to first be completely honest with yourself.

I'm not saying all sales people are like this or even most, I just know that I am and I demand that kind of honesty from those vendors I buy from. Also I won't take on customers who are less than honest, less than trusting. After years and years of dealing with customers in a service business I can tell you there is as much dishonesty on the other side of the counter. Mostly because people hold your opinion, that all sales people are inherently dishonest so they try to counter that perception by being dishonest themselves.

Even if you never have contact with customers you still have to "sell" ideas to your boss or to your subordinates. The CEO sells the company to investors and customers. Even the mail room guy sells his ideas to the other workers and his boss. You sell stuff to your spouse... when you try to tell them you want to go to this vacation location or that one.
