GF:

I'm blinded by those colors on your chart. Literally. Are you the guy who fills in the colors for The Simpsons. Astounding, really.

As for how long you get before a flattening of the VIX gives you the "head for the hills" signal, I remember doing some (admittedly casual) checking over the past couple of years and felt (feelings, nothing more than feelings . . . ) it was a 4-5 trading day period. It could be longer.

I would go back, data mine, backtest, and recalibrate except I'm temporarily (or maybe permanently) blinded by Gottfried's chart.

Hey, here's a traveller's joke: What's the difference between a Chinese temple and a Chinese whore house? Easy, the whore house is tastefully decorated.

Gottfried.

thanks for the great chart!
home.attbi.com

for this last bottom, I used those two as "indicators" on when to buy. Usually I try to catch a bottom and am always a bit too early. This time I waited for the bpcompq to turn up AND for the VIX to turn down... then I bought. Just recently I booked some nice profits for some of what I bought (67% for LRCX bought at $8.92 for example).

I think this is a good timing indicator but I might stop working now that we've had some success with it!. :)

PS the next indicator we need is how many people on SI are bragging here about their short positions. :)
