The answer to that is simple. Lots of people didn't survive. Childhood head traumas were much more frequent; car accidents were frequently fatal, or much more likely to cause severe trauma. Now people often walk away from crashes that would have been fatal in cars without safety features.

Lead poisoning was common, severe, and sad. We still have lead poisoning, but less than we had, and we can treat it much better.

People who look at the past through rose colored glasses are probably people who haven't looked at the mortality statistics of the past.
