Sometimes it is unwise to kill something before you really understand it. It may be part of a larger chain, and in this case I think that may be true. Knowing where their base was, could have been a tremendous advantage

X, this assumes that we did a war with no intelligence. I don't think so. Intelligence is always a "shadow war" so it's hard to tell whats' really going on, but the fact that the mastermind of the Cole bombing was just handed over to us by an unnamed third country indicates that we are not neglecting the shadow war.

The fact remains that having a safe haven is very important to organized terror/guerilla forces. You can't run a war out of a shoebox. An estimated 70,000 men went through Al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan. By successfully attacking Afghanistan, literally the least accessible terrain on the face of the earth, we have put every other country on notice that openly supporting Al Qaeda is not a smart idea.
