There was a time when I had to contemplate the prospect of having to kill millions of people (Russians if you have to know). This experience had a profound effect on me. That young men should have to ponder these depressing possibilities was a sad statement on our condition (not that it was our fault or that there was a better alternative).

When the Cold War ended, I was infused with a delight that lasted several years. I could never understand why the event was not celebrated in the same way that the surrender of Japan in 1945 was. If anything, the Cold War was the more magnificent victory.
