Too many investors forget that the first rule of investing is capital preservation.


I would completely disagree with this as it applies to the stock market. The first rule is: DO NOT put money into any stock if you can not afford to lose the money (ie take a loss)!

Stocks go up and stocks go down. If you "invest" in stocks, you take the chance that your "investment" will go down (or disappear). There is (some) risk involved in any stock purchase. Buying or selling stock is not about capital preservation, it's about appreciation, or, more appropriately, it's about wanting your investment to appreciate.
