The definition you chose has all of the problems you pointed out. I proposed a definition (intent)that is functional, not for guaranteeing truth but in establishing a bond of social trust.

So we can agree definition number 1 (yours) is valid but rendered useless when the emphasis is put on grasping truth. Definition number 2 has some utility in establishing trust.

If Mr X is honest by my definition then we can know a couple of things. When he tells you he will do his best to be a partner in providing a home and support for the family, it strengthens your resolve in the project, helps you to make decisions on a personal course of action, etc. He may fail to bring home a penny but you at least have a better educated guess on how to plan your life than if he were dishonest. If you know him to be dishonest you gain nothing by his assurances. Your doubts may infact cause you to make poor educated guesses on how to proceed. (disclaimer) Just an illustration not suggesting anything about your home.
