8 years isn't that old but could probably be considered the life of a heater. Mine was about 20 years old when I had it replaced. New one is more efficient.

I know a guy who used to sell plumbing supplies in Knox county. Lots of high sulpher coal in the ground. Anyone on a well would ruin a heater in two years. 5 year warranty, buy one and get it replaced every 2 years for free.
