Bird feeders are so widely used here that the bears have learned to raid them.

Thats a common occurrence here in middle Ontario also.

If the seed is sterilized, they must not do a good job of it. We always have a ton of weeds growing up in the garden all around where the feeder is. As for the bears, they tend to get into the apple trees and sometimes go after my neighbour's beehives. It's the deer that come poking around outside the house looking for birdseed and chomping their way through the vegetable garden.
