Some U.S. Workers to Leave Jordan

WASHINGTON –– The State Department said Friday it is authorizing the departure of nonessential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Jordan and of family members of the official U.S. community there.

Spokesman Philip Reeker said the decision results from the overall assessment of the security situation after the assassination in Jordan in late October of a U.S. foreign aid employee, Lawrence Foley.

Reeker noted that a State Department regional travel warning has been in effect for some time and was updated recently.

No new specific threats have been reported for Jordan, Reeker said.

"We think it's a prudent measure designed to allow some embassy employees and dependents to depart post, should they decide to do so," he said.

Reeker said a separate advisory on Jordan will urge U.S. citizens to consider carefully the risks of travel there.

Jordanian authorities, he said, have been making extraordinary efforts to find those responsible for Foley's murder but have had no breakthroughs.

Secretary of State Colin Powell telephoned King Abdullah on Friday to thank him for his cooperation on security within Jordan and also in the war on terrorism.

Reeker was unable to say how many Americans would be eligible to leave Jordan under the authorized departure decision.
