The "we" is American society, in its typical practices. Just as freedom of speech means more than that we oppose censorship, but entails a high level of informal respect for the right to speak out (for example, a private citizen does not try to sabotage a public address system), so freedom of religion means that we show a modicum of respect for the idiosyncrasies of denominations we may not agree with. We acknowledge, within certain limitations (like child sacrifice) their right to determine their own membership, clerical structure, liturgical practices, and so on........
