I dont know the answer. I am merely stating the current situation. The question you ask is similar to "why does the Vatican have to be the custodian of Catholicism?". I don't know - its just the way it is.

In the unlikely event the house of Saud crumbles, the negative effects throughout the Islamic world would be unpredictable. For that reason, the US will help ensure that the house of Saud stays in control. There might be infighting within the Saud family, but the 'house of Saud' will maintain control. Besides, Saud and US share a common enemy : OBL.
