Globe says Desjardins Securities puts Nortel on "hold"

Wed 27 Nov 2002

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Nov. 27, edition that ending a
four-session rally Nortel Networks Tuesday slipped 16 cents to finish
trading at $2.75 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The Globe's Market Movers
column reports that Desjardins Securities cut Nortel stock to a "hold" from
a "buy" Tuesday because the shares have already surged past the brokerage's
stock price target in the month since it raised it to a "buy." Analyst Paul
Howbold said, "The rapid rise in the share price has prompted concerns over
valuation and investor expectations." Although capital spending by phone
companies appears to have stabilized, Mr. Howbold said he thinks investors
seem to expect spending to grow next year. He said he does not see
"sustained" capital spending growth until 2004. He also said investors
appear to have an "overly benign outlook" on Nortel's underfinanced defined
benefit pension plan. About 97 million Nortel shares changed hands on the
TSX Tuesday.
