I am neither for nor against anything -- EXCEPT ONE THING --I am against incompetent politicians. In my view Dick Cheney is incompetent. The flaw I see in Bush is that he relies on Cheney too much at times. Things got very screwed up with Cheney calling the shots on Iraq last year and Bush was wise to put Powell temporarily in the driver seat to bring the UN on board (at least to make it appear that way). Powell did a masterful job of undoing enough of what Cheney screwed up so as to permit some progress. Now we have to wait and see how things play out. It is at best a deeply flawed "coalition", but at least we can claim to have Romania on our side.

As for the broader issue of our policies, the US has made some terrible mistakes in the past -- like helping to create Saddam in the first place, not to mention our "partnership" with bin Laden. What do you think of the warlords we call the "northern alliance" in Afghanistan? I understand they keep New York well supplied with heroin. They don't strike me as the kind of people for whom "nation building", democracy or human rights have any real meaning.
