I saw a 80 ounce nugget found in a mine once. It is about the size of your fist, though flatter. Management did not see the nugget. Too bad. Timmins and KL have lots of nuggets. But let's face it, they are rare.

A beat frequency metal detector with 2 VFO tank circuits will differentiate iron from copper and copper from gold by frequency of the hum. Gold is higher, iron will pull the detector into the low range. You need a large tuned loop of about 24 inches to detect large deep nuggets and a small loop of about 8 inches to detect small nuggets. So a two loop machine with switch would be ideal. The large loop will not see the small loop ideally.

Large pays are usually heavier in magnetite and ilmenite which will stand out magnetically and pattern-wise from surrounding topography when passed with a proton precession magnetometer. A fluxgate will also do the job if leveled carefully.
