The eradication of fundamentalism will not be furthered by the destruction of Saddam Hussein, Hussein cultivates the fundamentalist faction to his own advantage but he is not a fundamentalist himself. The commitment to curing the situation has to be made by the UN and I believe force will be required. The application of force will have to be judicious, UN controlled and in some sense novel, if Iraq co-operates and disarms there is no one to shoot at.
The UN should identify and empower specific groups. The key is Agfhanistan, not Iraq, it is not going to be military action, it will be making a country work again. There is no easy model to empower those who can correct the damage done by fundamentalism and begin re-education, it will take time. Here is a group that is quite clear on what they need to attack the problem at it's source.

These heroic, indomitable women see the problems clearly, they have been at war a long time, the history of war in the Khyber Pass starts 2000+ years ago.
