HP Wins More Than $50 Million in New Business with Legal Firms Nationwide; Leading Law Firms Turn to HP's Mobile Technology, Industry-tailored Solutions

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov 25, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Attorneys from several leading U.S. law firms are gaining new freedom to roam untethered between home, office and the courthouse thanks to technologies that HP (HPQ) is providing as part of a series of comprehensive, long-term contracts together worth more than $50 million.

"HP blends highly useful technology with a stream of innovative mobile solutions to meet the challenges of lawyers who now demand access to legal and client information whenever and wherever they need it," said Jim Milton, senior vice president, HP Enterprise Systems Group, and managing director, HP Americas. "By understanding and responding to the diverse needs of law firms nationwide, HP is striving to be nothing less than the preferred technology provider for law firms large and small."

At Morrison & Foerster LLP, one of the nation's largest law firms with 18 offices worldwide, more than 1,000 attorneys now have immediate access to e-mail, corporate data and the Web using HP mobile devices. Morrison & Forester recently signed a three-year, $15 million contract for an HP StorageWorks storage area network (SAN), image services, Blackberry devices, Compaq Evo desktop and notebook PCs, industry-standard HP ProLiant servers, global services and all third-party software contracts through HP.

"We are making a strategic commitment to ensure that Morrison & Foerster leverages technology to help us better serve our clients and achieve a better return on our IT investments," said Tony Hoke, global technology procurement director, Morrison & Foerster. "HP was instrumental in delivering end-to-end IT solutions and service support that helps our business operate more efficiently."

HP also has been named the preferred technology provider for a major law firm headquartered in Southern California offering clients a global network of resources through its 1,800 lawyers in 21 offices around the world. The firm recently signed a multi-year contract with an estimated value of nearly $20 million for HP StorageWorks solutions, ProLiant servers, Compaq Evo desktop PCs and HP Carepaq services.

On the East Coast, a major New York City-based law firm recently awarded HP approximately $13 million in incremental business for industry-standard HP ProLiant servers, 2,500 Compaq Evo desktop PCs and HP 9000 servers.

In a competitive bid against IBM and Dell, Pillsbury Winthrop, LLP -- a global law practice with 800 lawyers in 16 locations -- recently awarded HP a $2 million contract for Compaq notebook PCs, broad U.S. and international deployment of HP ProLiant servers and other enterprise and access technology. Pillsbury Winthrop recently upgraded its entire IT infrastructure from Windows NT(R) to Windows(R) 2000.

In the Midwest, Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease, LLC, a rapidly growing full-service law firm based in Columbus, Ohio, recently purchased an HP StorageWorks Modular SAN Array 1000 6 Node SAN. And, Wyatt, Tarrant, & Combs, LLC, a full-service law firm based in Louisville, Ky., recently purchased an HP StorageWorks MSA 1000, a low-cost, scalable, high-performance storage system.

Wyatt partnered with NetGain Technologies, Inc., recently named an HP all-star reseller partner in the Midwest region, to analyze their needs for workstations, servers, strategic storage and the associated services that are required to bring it all together.

"Law firms, like other small- and medium-size companies, are looking for responsive partners to support the needs of their growing businesses," said Mark Jacobson, president and chief executive officer, NetGain Technologies. "HP's broad portfolio of IT products and services enhances our ability to deliver quality and affordable solutions that will help emerging firms achieve their goals."

HP Courts Growing Practices with Wireless Solutions

Cosho Humphrey Greener & Welsh, PA -- a Boise, Idaho-based practice with 50 employees including lawyers, paralegals and support staff -- needed to increase operating efficiency to provide greater value to clients.

Samuel Barker, systems administrator with Cosho Humphrey Greener & Welsh PA, wanted to create a computing environment that enables lawyers and support staff to access files and print any time from anywhere. Barker chose to deploy an HP wireless network with access points in public areas and key conference rooms, expanded the number of notebook and handheld computing devices, and equipped all computing devices and the primary workgroup printer with wireless access capabilities.

"The company's push to improve efficiency, coupled with recent improvements in transfer rates and the lower cost, made this the right time for me to build a solid business case for deploying an HP wireless network," said Barker.

Today, more than 80 percent of law offices in the United States use HP printing and imaging technology to deliver improved productivity at lower cost.

In Palo Alto, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati signed a multi-year, $1.8 million HP printing services agreement that offers ease of use and performance for office printing, printer supplies, maintenance, installation and services. The firm, which represents technology companies, investment banks and venture capital firms, is replacing older equipment with about 500 multi-functional color and black-and-white HP printers.

"HP has the best printing products in the marketplace breaking price and performance barriers," said Phillip Hoare, chief information officer, Wilson Sonsini. "We were provided with a robust printing service solution and concluded that it was a compelling reason to change our business model."

From case preparation to the courtroom, Taylor, Porter, Brooks & Phillips, LLP, a 90-year-old civil law firm based in Baton Rouge, La., relies on HP technology and the HP Customer Advantage program to help maximize the effectiveness of its attorneys and the firm's bottom line.

"We've built a very strong firm, and using technology to advance the practice of law to provide more thorough legal research, greater efficiency and more effective presentations are central to our strategic growth," said Charles McKenzie, director of administration, Taylor, Porter, Brooks & Phillips, LLP. "We've demonstrated that we can use technology to save clients money. By doing that we've been awarded more work, so it's helped us increase our business."

Taylor, Porter, Brooks & Phillips, LLP has more than 60 attorneys and isn't bashful about letting the world know that its IT strategy and technology are integral to its law practice. The firm's Web site at taylorporter.com features a Compaq notebook PC displayed alongside legal archives from the firm's founders.
