I was walking a friend's dog one winter night when we encountered a cow moose and calf. The dog charged right up to them and promptly got stomped. He was right under the cow and she was about to cut loose again when I called him back. We went home and he hardly moved for two or three days.

From then on whenever we encountered a moose he would lean up up against me, facing the beast, and growling. Just his way of telling me he would protect me from the moose. <g>
