That Geek Syndrome article was pretty interesting. Guess instead of nerdy types mating with nerdy types and slackers with slackers and etc., it's better for the human race to be mixed up at least a little.

OT The additive in Vaccines implicated is Thimerosal. In the US, we've been seeing products newly emblazoned with "contains no Thimerosal" because of the dangers associated with it. And to your article, certainly there will be those saying no correlation to prevent folks from seeking recourse.

New IOM Report Says Take Out Thimerosal!

Report Also Recommends Additional Research into Autism Link

"Is there a site you can refer me to that can give me the chemical breakdown of vaccines distributed by various companies? I am looking for mercury free vaccines, and the doctor said he couldn't be 100% sure. He gave me the pamphlets, and I'll be darned if I can make out this fine print medical jargon! "
Do you insist on Mercury-free vaccines?

On October 1, 2001, the Institute of Medicine (IOM), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), issued the long awaited results of its study on Thimerosal containing vaccines. The complete report, which is available on the Internet, is the most exhaustive study of the vaccine safety issue to date but reaches few definite conclusions, due to the lack empirical research. "The committee recommends the use of thimerosal-free DTaP, Hib, Hepatitis B vaccines in the United States, despite the fact that there might be remaining supplies of thimerosal-containing vaccine available."

Other recommendations or conclusions of the Institute of Medicine include the following:
Remove thimerosal from all vaccines given to infants, children or pregnant women.
The removal of thimerosal is a "prudent measure."
The hypothesis that thimerosal causes developmental disorders such as Autism is "biologically plausible."
Research should be done into the way children metabolize heavy metals such as mercury.
Research should be done into the treatment known as Chelation Therapy.
More study is needed on ethylmercury's effects on developing brain tissue.
Thimerosal should be removed from all products that are intended for use with infants, children or pregnant women.
Government agencies need uniform standards for mercury content in products.
Use only thimerosal free Hib, DTaP and Hepatitis B vaccines.
Research needs to be done into a safe, effective and inexpensive alternative to thimerosal.
Currently, the following vaccines contain thimerosal as an ingredient according to the Food and Drug Administration. Some of these vaccines have had thimerosal removed from their current version, however older versions of the vaccine may still be available in some locations. Therefore check with your physician before using any vaccine to make certain that it is thimerosal-free:

DTaP - Tripedia (Pasteur Merieux Connaught), Infanrix (Glaxo-Smith Kline), Acel-Immune (Wyeth-Ayerst), Certiva (North American Vaccine)
Td - All Products
DTaP-Hib - TriHIBit (Aventis Pasteur)
Hib - HibTITER multidose (Wyeth-Ayerst), ProHIBit (Aventis Pasteur)
Hib/HepB - COMVAX (Merck)
HepB - EngerixB (Glaxo-Smith Kline), RecombivaxHB (Merck)
Finally, the Federal Government has decided to take a close look at the entire issue of mercury and its link to developmental disorders, and this should begin to answer some of the questions that have been raised over the years. As yet, no one knows whether Autism and other developmental disorders are related to the thimerosal contained in common vaccines, but the current research initiatives by the Institute of Medicine are a giant step forward in understanding the relationship between these vaccines and the entire range of conditions on the Autism Spectrum.
