well, um, i wouldn't take it quite so far...however, what i decided was that there is there is some risk in s.africa, and that if gold does what "we" think it could, we will still profit handsomely from stuff like goldcorp...perhaps s.african golds will pay off more, but i'll take less to bet locally...

OK but South African Gold stocks are presently faring badly whilst, in an otherwise dull world currency market, the Rand is strengthening rapidly again the USD, Euro and £. What does the savvy institutions know that you don't. A coming gold / commodity bonanza,(but as you say you don't have to go into Rand to participate in this) further attempts by the SA government to allay the fears of investors etc

Another word of caution - I think you should be wary of embittered South Africans who have never come to terms with the really rather amazing changes that have happened to their country. People who thought that blacks were literally a race apart, those still espousing the us (or should it be the US) and the Communists world view which now looks so dated at least in its terminology. The "cooperating" whites thought of as traitors etc. Despite facing enormous problems the SA leadership may surprise them yet which will be very uncomfortable for their mindset.
