If I knew the technology well enough, perhaps I could. I don't, so that is why I am asking others.

I think you're overestimating the importance of ubiquity

Your examples are not very comparable. If one has multi-mode wireless, then using WiFi where it is available and something else where it is not is a solution that works. If one is WiFi only, then it isn't useable where it isn't available.

and understating the value of "free".

Again, I question your examples. Starbucks can decide to host WiFi because they think it will draw in additional customers for coffee, but where is the economic incentive that will make it really widespread?
