Ken Lucas, the only Democrat in the Kentucky congressional delegation, is considering switching parties to become a Republican, congressional sources said Monday. Lucas, a conservative, is considering the change in an effort to head off what is expected to be a strong GOP challenge in the 2004 election, the sources explained. He won re-election to a third term this month by a narrow margin, winning just 51 percent of the vote. One source, confirming first reports of a potential switch in the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, said the decision could come this week. Several calls to Lucas's office were not returned. "He's got a tough district. Nancy Pelosi becoming minority leader makes it even tougher," one senior GOP aide said in reference to the new liberal leader of the House Democrats. "Fifty-four percent of his votes are with the Republican leadership already," another congressional source said. Lucas has not publicly discussed his thinking. He was in attendance at a recent news conference where the question of conservative Democrats bolting the party was raised. He stayed silent while other members repeatedly said they knew of no Democrats considering a switch. Two senior Republican aides refused to discuss efforts by party leaders to persuade Lucas to switch and therefore tighten the Republicans' grip on the House. "No comment," said John Feehery, spokesman for Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois. "It's not helpful for our cause," the other aide said. "Not helpful to have additional news coverage."
