Clinton raised taxes and the economy improved. But, like yourself, I don't want to pretend to have an answer about what exactly needs to be done to heal the economy. However, my concern is that Bush will listen to his big oil supporters/lobbyist, (recall the Bush "energy crisis", the one that turned out to be manufactured by oil interests) and we'll see environmental concerns and achievements go down the tube in the interest of boosting economy. I mean, the way I think Bush will figure he can improve the economy will be via big business concerns, particularly oil, at the expense of the average joe. For instance, consider the current duty on Canadian lumber, what has it achieved? It protects big U.S. lumber interests, but has now made them uncompetitive. Canadian operations have streamlined to such an extent now, that even with the duty, they are more competitive than U.S. operation. Also, the steel tarrifs, ... protect who... big business, not the average guy nor does it do any favors to small businesses that buy steel. Americans pay more for steel and lumber as a result of Bush government actions to protect the stakeholders in those businesses, imo, than trying to deliver cheaper prices to small businesses and consumers.
