So they love Napoleon. He was their Pete Rose. We used to like him too, because he cut TJ a good deal on Louisiana Territory. Imagine the compounded return of that $15 million. He used that money to kick the Prussian's and Austrian's butts. Chances are they deserved it.

He'd be considered too "conservative" to get elected House Minority Leader in Washington today.

So, I don't understand what was so disturbing. The fact that they have more historical buildings than are in Washington and are more interesting than the current government buildings? Sorry, I missed it.
You didn't even mention the Eiffel Tower and how about the Palace of Versailles, now that is magnificient, IMHO.
BTW, I couldn't get into the Louvre when I was there. The workers were on strike!

"...while one has to go to some trouble to find the Impressionists on the top floor........ "

There's a very good reason they're hard to get to and on the top floor. The paintings in those rooms are worth over a billion dollars!

Anyway, how bad could Napoleon be? Didn't they name a pastry after him? You don't see a lot of desserts named "Hitler" or "Stalin"...

DC is a vacation I would like to take the kids on before they leave home. I've never been to Europe, but know many who have. I believe a key factor that sets the US apart from the rest of the world is the tenacity and ambitious nature of the people who have immigrated here throughout our history. As a rule few are willing to start over in a new country.
