The evidence is undeniable. Whether it is an absolute is the arguable point. A materialistic hermit or self obsessed deviant could argue against your rationale which is based on the assumptions about social responsibility.

Charity is good because it is merciful, and increases our sense of solidarity with our fellows in society. See, not so hard.....

Except that people today are comfortably removed from the objects of their charity. Today charity consists of things such as clicking on an internet link to save the rainforest. Detached disinterested charity is not true charity... You're right though charity is good.
