DETMER TO HAVE MRI
By DAVID MURPHY

November 27, 2002

Eagles quarterback Koy Detmer is scheduled to have an MRI on his dislocated left elbow Wednesday afternoon. He remains listed as doubtful.

Andy Reid, meanwhile, is focusing on A.J. Feeley's NFL starting debut.

"We'll see what the MRI tells us," said Reid, noting that Detmer has regained some flexibility.

Whether or not the tests show any peripheral damage to the ligaments surrounding the elbow will help determine a timetable for his return. Once a definite recovery period is set, the Eagles will have a better idea at how to approach the quarterback situation for the rest of the season.

“We’ll see,” said Reid. “We’ll see how it goes after the MRI. We have a couple of options there. We just have to see.”

Reid noted that bringing in a veteran quarterback may be an option if Detmer is out for several weeks, but admitted that it would be tough finding a veteran off the streets who could be brought in and run the West Coast offense -- even Randall Cunningham.

So right now, everything is up to the kids.

When the Eagles take on a rejuvenated St. Louis Rams squad on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Stadium, they will do so with a trio of quarterbacks who have never started an NFL game in their careers.

Feeley is set to make his first NFL start. Behind him are Tim Hasselbeck, promoted to the active roster Wednesday, and Tee Martin, signed to the practice squad on Wednesday.

“This week I’m OK,” Reid said. “I can’t tell you what happens in the future. For this week, I am comfortable with it.”

Reid wouldn’t rule out exploring other options during his press conference. Even when a reporter mentioned the name Randall Cunningham, the head coach responded by saying, “We’ll see.”

Feeley, meanwhile, is approaching his first game as a starter with confidence.

“I feel really confident right now,” said the former University of Oregon quarterback. “I think every quarterback goes into a game feeling confident. If you don’t, you have already lost. There is no sense in being out there.

"I’m feeling more and more comfortable every snap I get. I’m sure my confidence level will get higher with every snap I take throughout the week.”

His teammates apparently feel the same way.

“We have confidence in A.J.,” said running back Duce Staley.

Feeley knows what he has to do to win.

“Physically, we are going to have to play really well and I am going to have to step up too,” he said. “Mentally, it is going to be about limiting my mistakes and moving the ball down the field and putting guys into position where they can make plays.”
