Since the days of the Great Society the US government has expanded its social welfare expenditures at the expense of all the other truly needed functions of government. The primary responsibility of government as given by John Locke is defense. With the exception of the Reagan military build-up defense spending has become an ever smaller quantity of expenditure. We all know the result of this.

Not only do we have a war against terror but also we have an economic war against powers who have chosen to be capitalist while we have chosen to be more like what almost destroyed our opponents. One way of addressing the economic war or the foreign war without direct military intervention is to strengthen third world countries. The cost of letting third world countries like Afghanistan flap in the wind rather than reinforce their economic well being, leads to situations where we have to engage in military intervention in order to save ourselves. Therefore it is imperative that we make every effort to secure our borders by making the countries on, or around them, strong. Since the world has grown small all countries are around, and so government must grow larger to address this threat.
