We generally cook up a theme and then long and/or short stocks accordingly - like, west coast port strikes >> short toy and apparel manufacturers dependent on holiday sales and with production facilities in Asia, or no revival in telecom spending in sight >> short telecom equipment stocks, etc... I am no chart-hugger, but I leave timing issues to the technical analysis guy. We generally work with options, so stop-loss marks don't work as well. It is a tough decision to cut a position and most often we just roll it.
