What is very "american" and I suspect "human" as well is the herd instinct. This causes swings in the market or stocks both up and down to be greatly magnified, regardless of what underlies the basic move. If an investor can't improve investment performance when dealing with either case isn't the investor like a football team with an offense and no defense or vice versa? So I see this as having nothing to do with the source of the market move and everything to do with competant investing.
