Yes, I think that and find it to be a common psychological phenomenon among others. I will take your word that you don't think it works that way for you.

Ex: As a boy I could imagine being Huck or Tom and having the other as a friend as well as having Jim as a friend. I hated Huck's dad and can see that the Huck character would be less defined without the presence of his dad in the story. I don't know any boys who have read either story, and enjoyed it, that would disagree with those statements.

Children go to a wooded area and play "Huck Finn" or "Tarzan" or whatever after reading a story they like. They may also just day dream that they are experiencing the circumstances. Adults day dream and imagine themselves dealing with the situations of a story as well, at least the ones I "KNOW" other than you.
