Well, what you are referring to as "self- evidence" would better be called introspection. You observe that things that happen to others often cause us pleasure or pain, and therefore that we care about what happens to others. You note that when we are distressed at the sight of someone's suffering, we often want to help, and will if we can, even at the cost of considerable inconvenience to ourselves, and even if the action leads to no benefit for ourselves except the satisfaction in having been helpful. Therefore, you conclude that there is such a thing as pure charity, even if you cannot tell in every instance whether the motive is mixed or not......Does that about cover it?
