The sea is called impersonal. It has no regard for the island. The palms "whisper together" or their bark, rubbing each against the other, sounds like ugly talking, etc. And there are several other instances where human qualities are used to describe animals, or inanimate objects. When human qualities like "hungry, or "impersonal" are attributed to objects, or animals I call it personification. I don't know what you call it when you attribute animal characteristics to inanimate things- animalification? That would be the squirrel metaphor.
