Since it is a demonstrably contingent importance (the outcome of a case hinges on it), of course they are not important to me if I do not care about the case. However, the difference between mankind and the other animals is demonstrably of importance ---- to mankind. The differences between a porpoise and a shark are indeed important as a matter of science, and as a practical matter for someone who might go to an ocean beach. It is assumed, in noting the relative importance of differences, that one has occasion to contemplate differences......
