Yes. Install RedHat 8.0 or Slackware 8.1 and Applixware for business Software. Get about a 266 or 400 MhZ system with 128 megs SD Ram. Stick to Asus, Abit, gigabyte mommie boards, SB sound cards, and US Robotics non-winmodem modems. Any tower case will do. Stay away from onboard video and sound cards. I would not get ANY winmodem or wincard at all if you run Linux. Installation is painless and setup easy. I would get an aftermarket manual from Que and SAMS too. Download opera for a browser. When you get to installing X (the graphics interface) I believe it is all abc now. It helps a lot to know the make and model of your video card, and what sort of monitor you have.. its vertical refresh rate and its khz horizontal sync range.

Yer choices for non MS OS's are

FreeBsD -- like linux
NetBsD -- like linux
Qnx -- don't think so
BSDi -- unix clone
Linux -- RedHat, Slackware, SuSe, Mandrake, Caldera, Storm
Plan 9 (not recommended for beginners.)
OS2 (Is it still alive?)
Mac -- $$$$$$$ good luck,. but it is point an click for dummies.. check out the cost of software before you get into this area..
Xenix -- I think it's dead. no longer supported by MS.
Sun Solaris -- there is a version for the PC

Otherwise it's Commodore Amiga (Still made in Britain), Acorn, Commodore 64, Tandy Radio Shack Colour Computer,
Palm Pilot, Blackberry etc..

Remember IBM and Dell support Linux.

BTW, the oxpecker analogy fits well with your complaint earlier, about Canada hiding behind the US for military support...

Oxpeckers spend most of their lives on their hosts, using them for protection for predators (such as moving to the back side of the animal when approached) and sitting on them to roost and preen. montereybay.com
