I found it to be more of an annoyance. Watch one episode of The Practice and next thing you know the Now-Playing menu is full of LA Law, Perry Mason and Judge Judy.

Trust me. Even with the thumbs-up feature disabled, the next thing you will want after getting a TiVo is more recording capacity. You won't be able to live without the machine. It's the biggest household productivity enhancer since the refrigerator. Not kidding.
