I agree with you, but that is the practical aspect, which seems to be lost on most supporters of this "we will make democracies out of every country" idea.

I was talking more on the philosophical side, but nobody seems interested in it anyway :)

The problem is that the US doesn't have sufficient power to impose its governmental system on the rest of the world.

Moreover, if we did have such power, it would only end up corrupting us.

My own belief is that as surely as paganism was swept from the scene by Christianity, liberal democracies will ultimately prevail because they are simply more robust and productive than any dictatorship, and all the more, dictatorships hampered by religious fundamentalisms. The Soviet empire wasn't even hampered by this last problem, and where is that empire now ?
