U.S. regulators approve Level 3, Genuity deal

BROOMFIELD, Colo., Dec 24 (Reuters) - Telecommunications network company Level 3 Communications <LVLT.O> on Tuesday said antitrust regulators gave the nod to its $242 million purchase of high-speed Internet services provider Genuity Inc.

Level 3 said the statutory waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino rule expired without opposition from regulators but it still needs additional clearance from the government and the bankruptcy court.

Genuity filed for bankruptcy protection in November to facilitate the deal after it defaulted on its debt in July when its former parent, Verizon Communications <VZ.N>, decided not to rescue the money-losing company.
