KT,

One of these 40 somethings is my daughter and of course her mother thinks she spends to much and does not save enough. <g> If you think the price of these cell phone and HD quality screen toys are expensive - they are cheap. She deep sea dives and is into under water photography. On her most recent trip in November to Cozumel she decided she was going to upgrade her under water analog camera - holy cow - I thought she was buying the company that manufactured the darn thing. Then there are under water lenses, under water flash requirements, under water everything. Her birthday is in November and you can guess what happened!!! We could have bought a fair amount of HMY or GFI and bought this stuff in a few years with the dividends. <g> I do not know why these kids can not find entertainment that cheap!!! Also, do not think deep sea diving cameras and associated equipment are going to be big this Christmas. <g>

More CD reviews: A couple of disappointing efforts from two of my favorites: Billy Joe Shaver gets a bit too deep and introspective in his new "Freedom's Child." He has always had that side to his songs, but he mixed it better with the raw humor. Now, the guy has a reason to go maudlin on us. Within a year, his mother died, his wife died and his son/lead guitarist died of an overdose of heroin. So, I understand it, but it made for a lesser album than his previous productions. Not that there aren't highlights. Wild Cow Gravy is good and so are a couple of other cuts. There just aren't enough of them.

Tom Waits "Blood Money" is also a weak offering. He seems to have a grudge with God on this album. Let's see, ugly guy sleeps with lots of beautiful women because he's famous and makes lots of money singing even though his voice sounds like bacon frying. Oh, yeah, God has roughed him up a lot. <g> As with Shaver, there are some good cuts, but he seems to have expanded on the worst parts of his previous album and ignored the good stuff.

"The Wallflowers" Red Letter Day surprised me by being so good. I liked the first album, but figured Jacob Dylan had been working on it all his life and the follow-up would be weak. Again, this is not a pop singer whose voice could have made it at The Met. But the lyrics are good and he sings better than his old man. Remember, this kid grew up during The Traveling Wilburys phase. He seems to have picked up Dad's writing style, Tom Petty's singing style (and Tom stole it from Roger/Jim McGuinn of The Byrds), George Harrison's lighter aura, Jeff Lynne's production values and Roy Orbison's...uh, maybe he knows a Pretty Woman. <g> No one song is a standout like "One Head Light" on the first album, but there ain't a stinker in the bunch.

Good Book for thriller lovers: "Cash Out" by Paul Boray. You've got SF Chinatown, a scared bookie, a resourceful ex-hooker, a burnt out ex-cop, some hot female cops, and a bunch of really ugly villains and corrupt politicians. Despite the real life atmosphere, it is great reading.
