are people really this desperate?

Well, yes, I think they are. LOL.

Actually I have a theory on at least some of this rampant buying. I think it is fueled by price decreases... not of the "in store special" variety (although razor-thin margins at retailers add to it, for sure)... but the current shift to outsourcing production which is showing up in pricing from say, where prices were 5 years ago.

The point being, part of this buying might be a one-time event. There's only so far outsourcing will take you price-wise.

This weekend I came across cashmere sweaters. When I was in college 15 years ago you couldn't touch a cashmere sweater under $200, and those were the cheap ones. Today- you can go to a highend scottish store and pay $500 for a really beautiful cashmere sweater- the same price as 1988. But now, you can go to Bloomingdales and they have some for $59.!!... not the top of the line but not terribly junky either, sort of a mid-grade... and this is before xmas too... I bought 3.

I would not have bought these 3 sweaters had I not remembered how much they "used to" cost. They are obviously sourcing these from Bangladesh or somewhere.
