No, from what I read, it was nothing like "divorce or die".

The man was well rewarded by being "promoted" many times in a short time.

Saddam has a way of rewarding his men. Even when his men lost the Gulf War and were being chased back from Kuwait into Iraq, he announced on TV his men had fought well and he promptly raised their salary!!! Smart move on his part to maintain his men's self-esteem and to prevent them from feeling alienated.

Before the bombing and shooting started, he told his fighters not to fear the combined might of the Coalition as Allah would neutralize their weapons etc2. And they believed him until the bombing and shooting began.
