It wasn't really piracy, a hurricane destroyed the lighthouse in 1846. Spanish ships full of silver and gold looking for the lighthouse would crash on the reefs. Then the citizens of Key West would sail out for a little salvage work. They said by 1860 all of the flatware in Key West was made out of gold. The initials may have been wrong but it was still gold.

In 1894 a new lighthouse was built ruining a good thing for the locals. They mentioned a lot of ships that had been damaged and sunk in deeper water. Some of them have been found and have yielded fortunes. I think you might be interested in this lady's investment outcome-
