David Re...Is this the case? If it is, then is there any hope for resolution of this problem?

David, sorry, I missed your post on sunday.

With the current dynamics, probably not. As I have elaborated, the whole of the middle east needs to be bought into the 21st century. The dictatorships, monarchies and tribal warlords were also common in Europe, until the 18th, 19th centuries, when they started to disappear. In many ways the democracy of America formented the French Revolution, which has changed almost all of Europe, Russia, and possibly even China. If the Arabs ever hope to keep up with a changing world, they must be adaptable to change. Islam, if it is to continue to grow, must start to represent modern values.

Just as America may have helped touch off the French revolution, I think Iraq could be the match that starts a middle eastern revolution. Saddam is despised by all sides, so it should be easy to institute a regime change, and while we are at it, change the country from a dictatorship run by religious factions, to a democracy which tolerates all religions, be they Islamic, or Christian or Jewish. It may take a strong provisional gov. to pull it off, such as the ones we had in Japan or Germany, after WWII. Israel also was started as a religious state, and should open up to a democracy with tolerances for all religions. That said, greed can be a wonderful thing as greed transcends almost every other vice. Greed should be used in this case to eliminate secularism, by showing the people in the area the benefits of working together to achieve common goals to all religions, would increase their wealth and prosperity. A strong central government with a plural, inclusive democracy could easily overwhelm the monarchies in the area, especially the ones dependent upon aid to survive. Iraq has the natural riches to become a great nation amongst the losers in the Middle east, and therefore could easily become the showcase we need to institute change there.
