I am perfectly happy to use it as the metric, as long as the whole story is included. Then we learn that proportionately small differences in DNA can lead to profound differences between species. The people who use the figure to show we are not very different than chimps are idiots: manifestly, we are very different than chimps. So the lesson is that genetically, major differences do not require large reconfigurations of DNA. We might not know that without research, but then, we also might not know that blood is reoxygenated without research........
